Objective of the project

Imagen
WOOD4LIFE is a European project that promotes sustainable forest management and the use of durable wood products as a climate change mitigation strategy. Through technological innovation, interregional collaboration and a strong engagement with local communities, the project aims to reactivate the forest value chain in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) and Parco Nazionale Appennino Tosco-Emiliano (Italy), generating green jobs, conserving biodiversity and storing carbon in durable wood products. WOOD4LIFE represents a replicable model for a low-carbon economy, aligned with the EU strategy on carbon reduction and rural resilience.

PROBLEMS

  1. High land fragmentation, depopulation and rural abandonment.
  2. Existing value chains from wood are not prepared to store carbon in the long term.
  3. There are tools to economically value ecosystem services that can compensate for the losses of traditional forest management, but they need to be improved.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Increase and improve forest partnerships to optimize sustainable forest management and the provision of ecosystem services and timber for long-lasting wood products.
  2. Improve forest-wood value chains through the participation and training of key actors and the development of a value chain protocol for climate change mitigation actions.
  3. Strengthen existing systems and promote the development of a market for ecosystem services. To this end, a tool will be designed to measure and monitor the climate change mitigation potential of both forests and the timber products obtained from them.
